The Konark Festival is an annual celebration of classical dance and music that takes place in the beautiful city of Konark, situated in the Indian state of Orissa. The festival is held every December in an open-air auditorium with the stunning backdrop of the Sun Temple, located on the Chandrabhaga beach of Konark. The festival aims to promote Konark as a top tourist destination in India.
The festival features performances of traditional dances such as Odissi, Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Mahiniattam, and Sattriya. The sounds of Ghungroo bells, flute, and Pakhauj, along with the captivating performances, create a festive atmosphere that enchants both locals and tourists.
The Natyamandir, the dancing hall of the 700-year-old shrine, is a magnificent architectural wonder with well-adorned sculptures of traditional dance poses, famous musicians playing drums, and beautiful dancers. The Natyamandir is adorned with two fierce-looking lions and an elephant sitting with a man, symbolizing power, wealth, and justice, respectively.
Initially, the festival was organized for three days in 1989, but due to its increasing popularity, the duration was extended to five days. Apart from the mesmerizing dance and music performances, tourists also enjoy the craft mela and handicraft exhibition organized by the State Industry Department since 1991. This fair showcases a variety of trendy handicrafts, artist camps, rural handlooms, potteries, and many more homemade accessories. Visitors can also indulge in a variety of delicious cuisines available at the stalls.
The Konark Festival is a must-visit for those who love to experience the richness of Indian culture, art, and traditions. The festival has become a major attraction for both Indian and international tourists, and it continues to promote Konark as a top cultural and tourist destination in India.
